Finding Heart and Humor in Love & Lidocaine by Kendra Hope

There’s something uniquely comforting about a well-executed small-town romance—especially when it moves with the snap and sparkle of a rom-com. Kendra Hope’s Love & Lidocaine delivers that cozy familiarity while still feeling fresh, balancing swoon-worthy banter with real emotional depth.
A Protagonist for the Overthinkers
The heroine, Hope, will feel instantly familiar to anyone who’s ever gotten stuck in a spiral of “what ifs.” (I'm looking at myself and a few close friends of mine). Her constant second-guessing is written with enough specificity to be funny and painfully relatable, and it’s easy to root for her. What makes her stand out is even when her anxiety is loud, she doesn’t let it run her life—she makes the choice that’s right for her anyway. That combination of vulnerability and forward motion is genuinely refreshing.
The Charm of the Genuine Good Guy
Jay is the kind of MMC I wish showed up more often: steady, kind, and emotionally safe without being bland. (One of my biggest pet peeves is a “romantic lead” who’s just toxicity in wrapped in good looks.) His humor plays perfectly off Hope’s, and their chemistry is built on quick, sharp banter that never feels forced. The dialogue does a lot of heavy lifting here—in the best way—so the relationship develops naturally and feels deserved.
Balancing Light and Shadow
Even with its rom-com energy, Love & Lidocaine isn’t afraid to step into heavier territory. The story lets the characters carry real baggage and face genuinely hard moments, and that weight gives the sweetness more impact.
