Today's glimpse into my new novel focuses on one of the elements that helped shape the story – the Santa Fe Trail. When I set out to write my latest novel, I knew this historic route would be the perfect backdrop for a story of love, courage, and friendship. Today, I’m excited to share how the real-life Santa Fe Trail inspired the world and characters of my new book.

Established in the early 19th century, the Santa Fe Trail was a vital link between Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Traders, settlers, and fortune-seekers braved harsh weather, treacherous terrain, and the unknown, forging a path that would shape the American West. The trail’s legacy is one of resilience and hope—a spirit I wanted to capture in my novel through the eyes of Jane Livingston. This story focuses on the long stretch that passes through Kansas as Jane travels through historic sites within Lawrence, Council Grove, Dodge, and more. The rich history in each of these towns made for interesting interactions and aided in broadening the world of 1886 Kansas. Jane's journey is filled with storms, tense encounters, and moments of beauty beneath endless prairie skies. Bringing this historic backdrop to life meant diving deep into history. I pored over old maps, read several history books until my eyes hurt, and researched diligently on online databases.

I’d love to hear your thoughts—have you read stories or diaries set along the Santa Fe Trail, or do you have your own connection to this piece of history? Share your experiences in the comments, and be sure to follow my blog for more behind-the-scenes looks at my writing and updates on my novel’s release!
